URL Encode / Decode

Percent-encode a URL component or decode it back to UTF-8 text.

This tool runs in an isolated frame on tools.freetoolspro.com. Your files and inputs stay on your device, and advertising on this page cannot read them.

Your inputs are processed in your browser and are not sent to our server. Privacy details

When to use url encode / decode

  • Encode a query parameter containing spaces or punctuation.
  • Read a percent-encoded value while debugging.

How it works

Uses the browser’s encodeURIComponent and decodeURIComponent. Spaces become %20 and a literal plus sign becomes %2B.

Supported inputs and limits

Uses component encoding, not full-URL preservation. Slashes, colons and question marks are encoded. A plus sign is literal; it is not automatically converted to a space. Malformed UTF-8 or percent escapes are rejected.

Common questions

Should I paste an entire URL?

You can, but reserved separators will also be encoded. This tool is designed for individual components such as parameter values.

Why did + stay + when decoding?

This is URI component decoding. HTML form encoding has a separate plus-as-space convention.
