How it works
TextEncoder converts the exact input to UTF-8 bytes. Web Crypto SubtleCrypto.digest computes the selected SHA hash.
Supported inputs and limits
Text input only, up to 2 MiB. Web Crypto requires HTTPS or a trusted local origin. Hashing is not encryption or a password storage scheme. MD5 and SHA-1 are not offered.
Common questions
Do spaces and line endings matter?
Yes. A trailing newline or a different line ending changes the bytes and therefore the digest.
Can I reverse the hash?
No decoding operation exists. A hash is a digest, not encrypted text.
