When to use jpg to webp

  • Create a WebP copy for a website.
  • Compare file size at acceptable visual quality.

How it works

Decode JPEG pixels and encode them as WebP through canvas. This is another encoding pass, so higher quality cannot recover detail already lost in the source.

Supported inputs and limits

JPG input only. Encoding support depends on your browser and is checked before a download is offered. A WebP result is not guaranteed to be smaller.

Safety limits are 25 MiB / 32 megapixels on desktop and 12 MiB / 12 megapixels on touch or low-memory devices, with a maximum side of 8,192 pixels. A smaller limit does not guarantee success on every device. Clear the image to release its preview and output.

Common questions

Can I choose lossless WebP?

The native canvas interface does not provide a portable explicit lossless switch. The quality control is an encoder preference.

What if my browser cannot encode WebP?

The tool displays an error instead of offering a PNG disguised as a .webp file.
