When to use compress image
- Prepare lighter web images.
- Reduce the size of an attachment.
How it works
Native browser encoding trades file size against visual detail for JPG and WebP. Every output reports actual bytes; a quality value is an encoder setting, not a measured percentage of retained quality.
Supported inputs and limits
Some already optimized files become larger after re-encoding. PNG quality is not adjustable through the native canvas encoder. Use JPG/WebP or reduce dimensions when suitable.
Safety limits are 25 MiB / 32 megapixels on desktop and 12 MiB / 12 megapixels on touch or low-memory devices, with a maximum side of 8,192 pixels. A smaller limit does not guarantee success on every device. Clear the image to release its preview and output.
Common questions
Why did the file become larger?
The source may use a more efficient encoder, a different format or stronger compression. Re-encoding cannot guarantee a smaller file.
Can I specify a strict KB limit?
Use Resize Image to Exact KB for an iterative search under a size cap.
